Extra-medium is an initiative engaged with research, teaching and design
projects looking at transformation trends and development
potentials of post-socialist Eastern European cities. The project founded by Daniel Kiss is based on international collaboration and
is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
Extra-medium
is an integrated part of the scientific and academic content at the Urban
Design Institute, ETH Zürich.
Focus of projects within the framework of extra-medium include investigating specific development trajectories of cities based on
their unique pre-socialist heritage, their socialist period legacies and post-socialist normailities, and studying spatial impacts of
their urban management models, distinct from western policies.
Extra-medium also initiates collaboration with active groups to develop prototype projects in order to
trigger development in post-socialist cities by incorporating demands and potentials of various actors. Joint investigation is planned
with municipalities, private developers and academic institutions to submit project proposals to the EU Cohesion Funds.
Current research focuses on the post-socialist transformation of Hungary's capital, Budapest, while recent smaller exercises include
analyzing specific urban conditions in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and Gdansk, Poland.
